Alexander (Oleksandr) Kruglov

Project: "The Losses of Jews in Ukraine 1941-1944"

Term of Yahad-in Unum Fellowship: September 1, 2016 to November 30, 2016

Background:

Dr. Alexander Kruglov is the Scientific Advisor at the Ukrainian Institute for Holocaust Studies (Ukraine), the member of the Scientific Committee of Yahad – in Unum (France), and the associate Editor of the “Russian Library of the Holocaust” (Russia). He received his PhD from Kharkov State University (Ukraine) in 1989. His dissertation is titled Racism as a Social Phenomenon. Dr. Kruglov contributed more than 460 entries to the Encyclopedia of Camps and Ghettos. 1933-1945: Volume II (Bloomington, IN: Indiana University Press, 2012) which is a publication of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, and more than 200 entries to the Holokost na territorii SSSR. Entsiklopedia (Moskva: ROSSPEN, 2009).

Fellowship at Yahad:

While in residence at Yahad-In Unum’s Research Center in Paris, Dr. Kruglov examined testimonies recorded by Yahad – In Unum in the present-day regions of Odesa and Mykolaiv in the Ukraine that were under Romanian occupation during WWII. These sources allowed him to complete his research, based on his study in the Soviet, German and Romanian archives, about the fate of the Jews in the Odessa region (in its borders of 1941) and to add new places of execution and further information about the crimes perpetrated in these places. The fellow focused on the specific fate of the Jews from the city of Odessa who were deported by Romanian gendarmes in the Odessa region.

Dr. Kruglov has published 17 monographs and collections of documents including:  Entsiklopedia Holokosta: Evreiskaya Entsiklopedia Ukrainy (Kiev, 2000); Katastrofa ukrainskogo  evreistva. Project: "Concentration camps, forced labor camps and ghettos on the territory of the district of Galicia in 1941-1944"

Term of Yahad-in Unum Fellowship: September 20, 2016 to December 15, 2016

Background:

Volodymyr Zilinskyi is currently a PHD candidate at the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv (history department). His subject of scientific research is as follows: “The Holocaust on the Territory of the District of Galicia during the Soviet-German War: the Source Studies Research”.

Fellowship at Yahad:

While in residence at Yahad-In Unum’s Research Center in Paris, Volodymyr Zilinskyi examined testimonies recorded by Yahad – In Unum in the present –day regions of Lviv, Ternopil and Ivano-Frankivsk in the Ukraine. The consultation of these original sources allowed the fellow to complete his large-scale study of the Holocaust in Galicia. The testimonies of the local eyewitnesses of the ghettoization, the forced labor and the mass killings of Jews in Galicia will highlight the regional specificities of the Holocaust in Galicia, enabling a better understanding of how the Nazis implemented the extermination on a local level.

Publications:

He has studied different aspects of the Holocaust, working in the state and regional archives of Kyiv, Ternopil, Ivano-Frankivsk and Lviv. Anna Abakunova

Project: "'Jews, Roma and locals': Inter-Ethnic Relations in Transnistria"

Term of Yahad-In Unum Fellowship: June 24 – September 18, 2015

Background:

Originally from Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine, Anna Abakunova attended Dnipropetrovsk National University and is currently a PhD Candidate at the University of Sheffield. Anna's research subject intersects history and memory, or in her words falls under "memory studies."

Yahad Fellowship:

While in residence at Yahad-In Unum’s Research Center in Paris, Ms. Abakunova analyzed testimonies by Ukrainian witnesses and Jewish and Roma Survivors. She examined interviews conducted by Yahad – In Unum in the Ukrainian regions of Vinnitsa, Odessa, and Mykolaiv; the Romania regions of Oltenia and Moldavia; and in the Moldavian regions of Balti, Gagauzia, and Transnistria. Ms, Abakunova’s study highlighted the interaction between the villages and the implementation of the killings on the ground at the local level as well as the rescue of Jews and Roma by the local population.

Yuri Radchenko

Karazin Kharkiv National University

Project: "Ukrainian Hilfspolizei, Self-government and the Holocaust in Ukraine: The Case of the Military Administration Zone"

Term of Yahad-In Unum Fellowship: June 24 – September 18, 2015

Background:

Yuri Radchenko is a graduate of Vasil’ Karazin Kharkiv National University, where he completed a PhD in Holocaust Studies. During his fellowship at Yahad-In Unum, Yuri researched the participation of the Ukrainian auxilary police and local population in the extermination of the Jews. Yuri focused on where the killings took place as well as the number of people involved, but also studying the motivations of those who participated in the genocide. To complete this research, Yuri worked with Yahad's database of Ukrainian oral testimonies.

Yahad Fellowship:

While in residence at Yahad-In Unum’s Research Center in Paris, Dr. Radchenko examined testimonies recorded by Yahad – In Unum in the Zaporizhia, Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Cherkassy, Kherson, Volyn, and Jitomir regions of Ukraine. Using Yahad testimonies, Dr. Radchenko researched the role of the Ukrainian Hilfspolizei in the murder of Jews and the plundering of Jewish property in specific military administration zones (Kharkiv, Chernihiv, Sumy, Stalino, Voroshylovhrad oblasts), among other issues. He highlighted how the Nazis used the Soviet administrative system to implement the murder of Jews in these areas.
