TESTIMONY: Evgueni -“One day, while I was grazing the cows, I saw an open pit, filled with bodies of women and young girls. They had their hands tied behind their back, swollen faces and a scarf in their mouth. It was the komsomols that the Germans had tortured.”

BASIC INFO: A research team from Yahad conducted research for the first time in the Tver and Novgorod regions. The objectives were to investigate and document the history of the Holocaust by bullets, the Roma genocide and the massacres of the masses of Russian civilians and soldiers. During this research trip, the Yahad team interviewed 33 witnesses and located 12 execution sites, of which 70% are neither protected nor memorized.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND: The region of Tver was the region occupied by the Nazis closest to Moscow, fighting there was intense as the German army was obsessed with reaching Moscow.

KEY FINDINGS: Yahad thus investigated in 28 towns and villages in the two regions and focused its research and interviews on the following themes: – The evacuation of the Jewish population, one of the Russian regions where the evacuation was weakest due to the rapid occupation of part of the Tver region; – Prisoner of war camps; – The massacres of the Russian civilian population; – The deportation of the Russian population to the Baltic States by the German authorities.
