TESTIMONY: Anatoli – “The Jews were brought to the clay quarry. The local police set up the machine gun and started to put the Jews, group by group, at the edge of a pit. Between shooting each group, they drank.”

BASIC INFO: During the 14 days of research in Ukraine, the Yahad – In Unum team investigated in 24 cities and villages in the Odessa region. This 4th investigative trip was intended to further the investigation in this region of southern Ukraine.

During the course of this research mission, Yahad – In Unum identified 21 execution sites, of which 60% are without memorials and therefore completely unknown, and interviewed 45 witnesses.

The investigation of Yahad – In Unum in this part of Ukraine, that was called Transnistria under Romanian occupation presents some characteristics:

– The fate of the Moldovan and Romanian Jews moved to this region;
– Isolated shootings and mass shootings often carried out in a chaotic manner by Romanians;
– Great Famine of 1932-1933.
